There is subluminal flight and there is plusluminal flight.
Subluminal flight (SLF) is achieved through ion thrusters and is used on space ships to leave planetary orbit and for general propulsion. Plusluminal flight (PLF) is achieved through Alcubierre drives dubbed alcu reactors.
Alcu Reactor™
Alcu reactors generate a warp bubble. Space is shifted around the area of a space ship and space time is expanded and contracted which displaces the central region, i.e. the bubble, forwards. It is not the space ship that moves, it is the alcu reactor which acts on space.
The Warp Bubble
There are damaging effects on the destination when space ships leave the warp bubble. Particles outside the ship, but inside the bubble, are energized. The energized particles (EPs) will impact anything right in front of the bubble. EXPUG™ use this effect intentionally by decoupling ramming devices before leaving a bubble, thus hitting their targets with energized ramming devices (ERDs).
Power Source: Tachyon matter
Tachyon matter (antimatter) is used to power alcu reactors. Tachyon matter is generated in particle accelerators using Casimir Transducers (CT) and Tachyon Refineries (TR). Tachyon matter is stored in electro-magnetic field traps EMTs and further stacked in EMT chambers.
Space Travel to Uncharted Destinations
Plusluminal flight to uncharted destinations require a lot of tachyon matter. Only special space ships are equipped to do so. To be equipped for plusluminal flight means being equipped with one or more alcu reactors and enough EMT chamber capacity. Some unequipped space ships can latch onto an Accipiter Platform™, thus piggybacking on the platforms ability to reach uncharted destinations through plusluminal flight.
Space Rails™
There are also tachyon channels which are generated by space rails. Space Rails™ can generate warp bubbles for space ships riding in the tachyon channel. Thus normal space ships can achieve plusluminal flight without alcu reactors and onboard EMT chambers. Obviously space rail infrastructure must be in place before a tachyon channel can be channeled from point A to B.
